The question is definitly good, but then comes the question why women should cry on their husbands death? why should they belong to or supposed to belong only one men?
these are also customs of hindu mythology and India. Should these also be abolished ?
The difference is in the thinking, the karwa chauth vrat is not only a trend and custom, but is the expression of love from a wife. now you will ask that why women only, then to answer you let me tell that I have been seeing my parents and their on have been observing this fast. I observe karwa chauth for my wife. If you love your wife then you should also do this because this is not as easy as giving money to your wife or expensive gifts on the valentines day.
In their culture this is what they could at most, but ours is a great culture and here love is belief not a formality.
and it was started as an expression of love, only when people(women) followed this by their own wish and wills, it came to custom, thats how any culture and custom starts.
this given women a tool to express their love for husbands before anyone in a religious way, which would otherwise was not practical in that time.
now exactly why women only? should men only have observed the same fast, the will have been as worshiped as women. but as women devised this way of worship they are respectable. Hail to all mothers-wives and daughters.
had both of them started the fast it would have become a formality as gifts on valentines day.
please follow our culture-religion and nationality. and look for the better side if not exact side of story is visible. their is no restriction on women to observe this fast but if they don't wish or unhealthy they can omit it. interestingly some of the modern women don't do this by force, neither they do this for custom and nor because of love they have but now a days they take it as a competition and fashion to observe or go with, and from there only these rituals have came in cluches of market as one of the comments reads it.
thanks
